Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung, the only reigning Olympic champions attending the Chinese Taipei Open this week, were beaten in the first round of mixed doubles play. Hoon Thien How, who had embarrassed German Open champions Lee and Shin Baek Cheol at home in April, again got the better of the Korean star as he and Amelia Alicia Anscelly got the better of the two Lees this time, winning 21-16, 23-21.

Afterward, it became known that Lee Yong Dae was suffering from tendonitis in his elbow and he and Jung Jae Sung were forced to withdraw from the men's doubles event. Korea's Yonhap News Agency later reported that the official word from the Badminton Korea Association is that the injury does not appear to be serious but that the decision to withdraw was made to stay on the safe side. The BKA also told Yonhap that Lee was having an MRI done at a hospital in Taipei, after which a proper diagnosis would be made.

Korea had ups and downs on the day. Kim Sa Rang upset India's Chetan Anand in the men's singles while top women's doubles seeds Kim Min Jung / Ha Jung Eun lost to last year's semi-finalists Zhang Dan / Zhang Zhibo. Korea still has three pairs active in the women's event, including the towering new pairing of Lee Hyo Jung / Kim Mi Young and youngsters Yoo Hyun Young / Jung Kyung Eun.
