[ARCHIVES] Lee Yong Dae Reveals his Infamous Wink Dilemma

September 6, 2008 by coolsmurf

Korean athletes Lee Yong Dae (badminton), Nam Hyun Hee (fencing), Lee Bae Young (weightlifting) and Wang Ki Chun (judo) who made their nation proud with an impressive showing at the recently concluded 2008 Beijing Olympics will soon appear on “Ya Shim Man Man – Entertainer Village” variety on 8th September to talk about their unusual experiences while training, etc.

Badminton player Lee Yong Dae who won the mixed doubles gold revealed his dilemma about his infamous wink gesture to thank his fans for their support.

He expressed, “At the Beijing Olympics, right after I did the wink gesture to thank my fans, I got around 1000 requests for me to wink again. I think I must have winked at least 100 over times since then. Now I have spasms in the lower part of my eye.” His words made everyone present understand the “pain” and “torture” that comes along with his high popularity and profile.

Infamous Lee Yong Dae Wink

Seo In Young carefully asked Lee Yong Dae, “Could you do the wink for us?”. Lee Yong Dae couldn’t stop smiling, “I’m Seo In Young’s fan” and started to wink charismatically towards In Young’s direction as everyone got excited.

[NEWS] CHINESE TAIPEI OPEN - Olympic Champion Injured == Badzine Courtesy

Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung, the only reigning Olympic champions attending the Chinese Taipei Open this week, were beaten in the first round of mixed doubles play. Hoon Thien How, who had embarrassed German Open champions Lee and Shin Baek Cheol at home in April, again got the better of the Korean star as he and Amelia Alicia Anscelly got the better of the two Lees this time, winning 21-16, 23-21.

Afterward, it became known that Lee Yong Dae was suffering from tendonitis in his elbow and he and Jung Jae Sung were forced to withdraw from the men's doubles event. Korea's Yonhap News Agency later reported that the official word from the Badminton Korea Association is that the injury does not appear to be serious but that the decision to withdraw was made to stay on the safe side. The BKA also told Yonhap that Lee was having an MRI done at a hospital in Taipei, after which a proper diagnosis would be made.

Korea had ups and downs on the day. Kim Sa Rang upset India's Chetan Anand in the men's singles while top women's doubles seeds Kim Min Jung / Ha Jung Eun lost to last year's semi-finalists Zhang Dan / Zhang Zhibo. Korea still has three pairs active in the women's event, including the towering new pairing of Lee Hyo Jung / Kim Mi Young and youngsters Yoo Hyun Young / Jung Kyung Eun. Today, Jung will be facing former Olympic champions Zhang/Yang for the third time this year.

An radio announcer(RA)- hello? would you like to say to the audience

YD - hello. I am badminton player lee Yong Dae.

RA - a little more please...(laugh)

eventhough pass 1 year, you have support for me.thanks all the time

RA- your words is very simple but it is perfect.(laugh)I think you wanted to be winner this the WC but you gained a second and third prize. you miss them. don't you?

YD - yeah. I miss it but ( I did my best.) I was pleased about it.

RA- so, many people wished you and Lee Hyeo Jung won the first prize at the WC. did you feel stress about it?

YD- maybe. I think so. I wanted to a winner of the WC because I won a gold medal of the Olympic. But I have next the Asian Game & next the WC. I will try it.

RA- I think you have stress when you heard news about Park Tea Hwan- He won the gold medal in Beigjing Olympic swim. He is sport star. but recently he didn't good result in the WC- I guess that you worried about 'If I get bad result in the WC' because you and Park became big star after Olympic...

YD - I think eventhough he had hard exercise. He didn't get it . so I am sorry about it. I had hard exercise too. and I felt a little stress. but I am satisfied with my game.

RA- You have many chance - the WC, the Asian game, Olympic...-please don't feel sad this game.

YD - ok.

RA - what do you come across your mind when you remeber last summer?

YD -I just ... Am I win the gold medal? I didn't believe it.

RA- It was time for dinner on Sunday when you became the winner at Olympic. you became a big star after you winked once for gold medal ceremony. tell me your feeling that time.

YD - I thought It was dream. I couldn't believe that many people love me. So I have exercised more after Olympic. because your support.

RA- I think nobody know you before Olympic , but now many poeple know you...Like this, do you have some change?

YD-yeah, actually I had stayed at home almost before 1 year. but now It is good time to me. some people know me ...not many... and they don't active to me now. so I feel comfortable. thanks their support.

RA- you didn't go out without bodyguard and you had to stay at your home that time. now your fan don't active to you.(laugh)

YD- not unsatisfied...(laugh)

RA- not unsatisfied...You are honest man. you said "If I get the prize money , I will buy a house to my parents." last summer. did you do it?

YD - Yes, I did it. I .think my family is happy because of me. so I can exercise better.

RA-Actually your living condition was not good. Many people were touched your gold medal story. you said " I wanna be winner at London Olympic with Lee Hyeo Jung" last interview, Your dream is possible?

YD- yeah, I can~ but she...

RA - didn't talk about it with her? with you?

YD- I think I‘d like to accept her opinion than mine, in consideration for her age and the strength her body. You know I can't by my will...

RA- so how old is she?

RA- you have 3 years for London Olympic, I hope she is your partner at London. I hope she has good physical strength.

YD - Yeah, I trust her.(laugh)

RA- If you win gold medal at London Olympic, can you wink ceremony again?

YD- I am trying to have another idea now. (laugh)

RA- (laugh) do you have different ceremony?

YD- I don't have. but I guess If I win the gold medal at the Olympic, I can do some ceremony.

RA- so. you talked to wink ceremony last interview, you decide to do something when you see the camera. and then you did wink naturally. you said?

YD- yes.

RA- I hope you have more nice ceremony. You and Park Tea Hwan won the gold medal and it was hot issue and gained big love. I hope You and Park win it again at London Olympic. can I expect that?

YD- I am sorry about that Park didn't get good result eventhough he had hard exercise. I hope I and Park become winner at the London Olympic like Beijing.

RA- 'I wanna be winner each other again! ' like this ... player Lee Yong Dae. your manner of speech is simple and honest as before 1 year. (laugh)

YD- I catch a cold so my voice is not good...(laugh)

RA- thank you for sharing your time eventhough you catch a cold in India.

YD - yeah, If you support for me and love me very much, I will do my best and I will get good result for you.

RA- yeah, thanks.

RA- I met him again remembering memory before 1 year. He is badminton player Lee Yong Daa.

[NEWS] Genius of Yong-dae the key, says Rexy - TheStar Courtesy

THE excellence of South Korean Lee Yong-dae crushed the hopes of Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to reach the world championship men’s doubles final.

And Malaysia’s doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky hailed the 20-year-old Yong-dae as a gifted player, who is set to break many hearts for a long time.

On Saturday, Yong-dae and his 27-year-old partner, Jung Jae-sung, stayed solid in crucial stages to beat the Malaysians 16-21, 21-14, 22-20 in the semi-finals.

And Rexy said that he stood in awe over Yong-dae’s charisma and strength.

“It must have been very tiring for him in the men’s doubles after having battled in the mixed doubles earlier (with Lee Hyo-jung-jin a 21-18, 9-21, 18-21 defeat by Denmark’s Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl),” said Rexy.

“But he fought through the tiredness and brought out the best game. He is young but played as though he was so experienced.

“His tactical play with Jae-sung was good. He dominated at the net and kept the shuttle low, forcing the Malaysians to lift it high. And Jae-sung just waits at the back to smash it as hard as he could to rattle our players.

“Our Malaysians did well to counter their strategy but Yong-dae was always a step better. He made the difference for the Koreans at deuce in the rubber game.”

Former All-England champions Yong-dae-Jae-sung will again be among the favourites at the Asian Games in Guangzhou next December.

Yong-dae wants to win world tiltle this time around

SOUTH Korean badminton star Lee Yong-dae is not a player who likes to be the second best.

And he is determined to play his cards right this time with Jung Jae-sung to win the world championships men’s doubles title. They are certainly the biggest threat to Malaysian second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who are in the same half of the draw.

At the last championships in Kuala Lumpur, Yong-dae-Jae-sung were beaten in the final by Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.

Victory then would have meant that Yong-dae had three major titles under his belt even before he turned 20.

Yong-dae won the 2008 All-England title with Jae-sung and the 2008 Beijing Olympic mixed doubles gold medal with Lee Hyo-jung.

“There are a lot of expectations on us at home (to win the men’s doubles title). And this has further motivated to get our hands on it this time,” he said.

Yong-dae added that although they were the fourth seeds, they stood a good chance to make the final.

“The draw is quite favourable to us. If all goes well, we should be there in the final,” he said.

A world title will place Yong-dae in his own league and this is something he wants to achieve.

“By the next Olympics (in London in 2012), I hope that I can win all the major titles in the world,” he said.

Another major title that he has not won is in the Asian Games.

Barring any upsets, Yong-dae-Jae-sung will play against Kien Keat-Boon Heong in the semi-finals. Even if Yong-dae muffs the chance in the men’s doubles, he can get it right in the mixed doubles with Hyo-jung.

[ARCHIVES] Short Interview with Yong Dae - Youtube

Interview Translation:

Q. You have already won an Olympic gold medal. Doesn't it put you under any kind of pressure or burden in terms of preparing for upcoming international matches?

A. Sure. I do feel a little burden after taking the gold medal in the Olympics. But I'm sure that I can achieve good results as long as I continue to enjoy the play itself.

Q. Are there any changes on you after winning the gold medal in the Olympics?

A. Yes. More people seem to recognize me on the street. (laughs.)

Q. (to his teammate, Han Sang Hoon) What kind of person is Yongdae? Could you tell us?

A. Yongdae is hard-working and polite to the senior teammates. He bears an extrovert and outgoing characteristic as well. However, he tends to become a little shy or introvert to the people whom he meets for the first time. But once you get to know him, you will find out that he is a truly warm-hearted person. He is also an eloquent talker and is amiable to the people around him.
If I ever have to point out his shortcoming, (chuckles....) it should be the fact that he does some grotesque and unexpected things once you are too close to him... (laughs...) I'm just kidding and as I said earlier Yong dae is truly a wonderful person.

Secret of Gold medal is just hot taste~

YD became through Olympic.

He looks nice.

He is called the wink boy.

Korea hot pepper paste is necessary.

YD stays much time in oversea. He has korea hot pepper paste all the time.

Spicy taste

His mother( Lee Ae-Ja) make dish of pork ribs when he comes home.

She cooks spicy it. He like spicy food. His favorite foods are KimChi casserole & hot pepper fish stew & spicy fried chicken .

… Heathy food? ... Ginseng steamed red is best~

Best food is ginseng steamed red for YD.

He always has it. Sometimes he has pork(삼겹살) & duck soup

But he don't eat dog & snake becaues his mother is a believer Buddhism.

His mother makes mix fruit juice for YD's skin.

The juice is made of fruit of various kinds & honey & her love
So he has nice skin ^^

Apparently those are twin singers who happen to call themselves "Wink". The article says that the national team coach Kim Joong Soo, along with Wink's agent, set up the publicity event, which lasted for about an hour and included lesson in an older popular singing style known as teuroteu. Lee Yong Dae said that because of his nickname, "Wink Boy", there is some crossover in Internet searches for him or for the singing group.

[ARCHIVES] Lee Yong Dae is a Player With a Well known "Sense of Anticipation" - NARNIA Courtesy

If you like my claim I will be happy to prove it partially. (BTW, LYD's sense of anticipation is very well known among the Korean players. Have you ever heard of that in Korea?) All my arguments are from my watching the games on internet and in videos. I usually enjoy watching LYD's games on internet live and then in videos at least a couple of times in analytical way with slow replays. I like to talk about this kind of stuff in more details with the game content itself not just from the scores or results. 1. MX Let me just comment on the losses against ZB/MJ in the past three consecutive tournaments. That would sound some excuse but it would be reasonable. Usually, I see the success of the KOR MX somewhat depends on LHJ's plays. I don't want to argue that it's always up to woman in MX. But on the three tourneys, LHJ did many errors with not much information/experiences about MJ who have shown extraordinary performance recently. As MJ is rising as a top-ranked player, the KOR duo will need more games with her to anticipate her playing styles. IMO, at the next rematch, I'm optimistic for KOR as they will then know much more about MJ. (And ZB was in a very good form at the games.) One more thing to note is... in 2009 Swiss Open, right one day before he played with LHJ in the final against ZB/MJ (which was the first match among the Final matches), he and SBC finished over-one-hour fierce battle against Boe/Mogensen which was the last match among the Semi-finals and finished after midnight! In sum, It was the last match he did through the whole Europe tours. In Swiss, LHJ was not bad, but in this case, LYD looked very tired as you can check how his movements were not that effective while ZB, who plays MX only, was flying over the court. (Note he had played all MX and MD for the three weeks as he usually advance to the SF or F.) (Against Boe/Mogensen, they was leading but in rubber set, you can check how SBC, who is younger than LYD, making errors.) I think LYD now know how MJ plays and I'm still go for him that he will manage MJ in his next matches with her. 2. MD Until JJS/LYD rising as 2008 AE champion, they had to store up sufficient experiences about world top-rankers. LYD was learning the others' playing styles ascribing them into his body. Finally, from 2008 AE, they started to show super performance, never lose to WR #1 and #2 Cai/Fu and Kido/Markis afterwards. Especially watch the video of AE 2008 SF against the MAS uncles to know how LYD saved the rubber set from 16-20; that's because he then knew how the uncles moved around court. (I have a bunch of things to prove about his learned plays. Just reflect that he always win the rubber set - why? - because he then came to learn how his opponents play. If you are occasional player in your club, you might know how this works IN PLAY.) However, the most difficult style they can manage looks of danish. Rasmussen is a peculiar one who had failed KORs in many ways. (You surely know how KDM/LKM lost to him and Olsen in 2004 Athens Olympics.) BTW, in the most recent game, which was 2009 KOR Open SF, JJS/LYD completely defeated the DEN team with absolute scores; It was reported a revenge match after 2008 Beijing defeat to them. (In the KOR Open, they lost in Final against another DEN team, Boe/Mogensen, in which, if you see the video, you might detect how the younger Danish players did something strange to make it through their seniors loss one day before. Reasonable excuse.) And in the 2009 Swiss Open, LYD could have won over the team even with rookie, SBC, which turned to be failure with SBC's lack of experiences as the commentator said about that. OK, that's my partial argument to prove how LYD is an outstanding learning player in current world badminton. I "don't" think that LYD is a good smasher(his smash speed is just so and so and look his jump-smash form which is very awkward) or a fast-moving, etc. player. But, he has very good credential for a badminton player, that is "sense of anticipation". (He looks very fast moving. Actually I would say No, he just moves effectively with anticipation that makes him look move faster.) And this sense is acquired after learning in the situations on the court through the real games against another players. He always, hits the bird after checking all moves of his opponents and the court status. In slow videos, it would be helpful if you can check how differently he sends the bird and how uniquely he moses back and forth to manage his opponents. So, he plays with knowledge of his opponents. If he faces a new strong opponents, he would lose. But after some learning time, He turns to be "yet another" player to the same opponents; he plays differently in a very brilliant way. LYD is very likely of winning in the rubber set. And, LYD is very likely of winning in the next match against new rising faces like MJ. (New rising stars can win LYD a couple of games, but not in later ones.) Last words, I'm not saying he's a super-man, never losing, ever-winning. Just forgive me as I have somewhat exaggerated about his ability to make it noticeable. Thanks! PS: ... one more addition in his MX performance. Do you think that LYD plays better than Nova or Limpele? I think Nova or Limpele has much better abilities than LYD as for badminton skills. But, LYD plays more brilliantly that makes him different from other players. He knows how Nova or Limpele moves on the court (in MX, I see INA man usually covers mid-fronts keeping his lady in his back.) and he knows how to make winning against those better players. Yeah, this is one of the key credentials for a good badminton player and every badminton lovers know it. And I'm saying that LYD is super in this aspect. If you want me to state another player in this aspect, I would say Park Joo Bong, Kim Dong Moon in KOR, Tony Gunawan, Hendra Setiawan in INA and Gao Ling who have just married - Congratulations!

[ARCHIVES] Lee Yong Dae Speaks - Badzine Courtesy

Olympic badminton mixed doubles gold medallist Lee Yong Dae is one of only four Koreans making the trip to Kota Kinabalu this week for the Super Series Master Finals. Lee and partner Jung Jae Sung, will be attempting to erase the memory of their disastrous men’s doubles showing in Beijing where they made a first-round exit. This time around, the pair are again on a roll, having won three tournaments in a row including the last two legs of the Super Series dozen. Lee took some time out after their third win, at the Yeosu International Challenge, to talk to Badzine about his upcoming campaign in Malaysia.

Interview and Photos: Don Hearn, Badzine Correspondent live in Yeosu

Badzine International: What teams are you most concerned about going into the Super Series Finals?

Lee Yong Dae: I’m not exactly sure which teams have qualified but the Danish pair Boe/Mogensen is a team we’ll be watching out for. Also Koo/Tan both because the tournament is being held in Malaysia and because they have just always given us trouble. In any case, because this tournament is for the best of the best, with only the top eight teams, the result will depend somewhat on who has the luck with them on that day.

BZI: How would you compare the fans in Malaysia with those in Korea?

Lee: Well, I like that badminton has become more popular since the Olympics but I would say that fans here come and cheer and clap for the players they know. In Malaysia, though, when Malaysia is playing, the whole crowd just seems to cheer as one. Also, a lot of fans seem to cheer for me, as long as I’m not playing against a Malaysian pair, so I like that. The fans there seem to really love the game and enjoy watching badminton more, too, so I would say it’s different in that way.

BZI: You went into the Olympics having won three of your previous four tournaments and now you’ve won another three in a row going into the Super Series Master Finals. How will your mental preparation differ this time from before the Olympics?

Lee: Well, apart from the Olympics, we have done well in every tournament this year and it’s definitely the best season I’ve had so far in men’s doubles so we were among the favourites going into that tournament and I think even as we were winning those tournaments, the players from other nations were able to figure out what it would take to beat us. This time we’re going to be more aware of that and we have been concentrating on varying our playing style so that we will have a better chance.

BZI: Is winning this event in Yeosu that meaningful to you after taking two Super Series titles?

Lee: Well, Jeollanam-do is my home province so I wanted to do well here and especially because there were so many people who came here to cheer for me, I’m glad I didn’t disappoint them. In fact, I’m just as happy to win this title as any of the Super Series tournaments. In every tournament, we play hard and try to beat every team so it’s just as satisfying in the end.

BZI: Has your life become a lot more complicated since winning the Olympics?

Lee: Well, for about one or two months, people recognized me everywhere and it became difficult to move around but now that 3 or 4 months have passed, a lot of people still recognize me in public and they greet me but it isn’t as intense as before so right now it’s perfect because it’s nice to get recognition and it isn’t an inconvenience.

Before the Olympics, I never got people recognizing me in public and even my mini-homepage went from about 200 visits a day earlier in the year to, on average, 2000 visits per day after we won the gold.

BZI: So is the increase in attention a good thing overall?

Lee: Well, if a lot of people recognize your face no matter where you go, there is the chance it can become inconvenient but in my case, I’d say that I enjoy the attention overall.

BZI: I’m sure our readers will be disappointed if I don’t ask you whether you have a girlfriend.

Lee: No, I don’t have a girlfriend.

BZI: Well, you seem to be popular with female fans in Malaysia and other places. Do you think the woman who finally catches your eye will most likely be from Korea or is there still a chance for the ladies elsewhere in the world?

Lee: Well, it’s really hard to say. We’re so busy with tournaments and training that meeting a woman and getting into a relationship really seems hard at this point.

His interviews completed, Lee Yong Dae goes to work on a stack of over fifty blank pages that he has been asked to autograph for his fans. Nearby, his coach and Olympic gold medallist predecessor Ha Tae Kwun looks over at his young charge.

“Are you having fun? Is it difficult?” Ha asks. “Yong Dae, this is your life.”

And Yong Dae smiles. He’s getting used to it.
